Among his best-known works are the orchestral compositions Rhapsody in Blue (1924) and An American in Paris (1928), the songs Swanee (1919) and Fascinating Rhythm (1924), the jazz standard I Got Rhythm (1930), and the opera Porgy and Bess (1935) which spawned the hit Summertime. Gershwin studied piano under Charles Hambitzer and composition with Rubin Goldmark, Henry Cowell, and Joseph Brody. Arthur Gershwin followed in the paths of George and Ira, also becoming a composer of songs, musicals, and short piano works. With a degree of frustration, George tried various piano teachers for some two years (circa. 1911) before finally being introduced to Charles Hambitzer by Jack Miller (circa. 1913), the pianist in the Beethoven Symphony Orchestra.

The best of George Gershwin's works you should know. Highlight some of the best pieces George Gershwin wrote and some of the lesser-known Gershwin works but ones that perhaps deserve a more frequent time in the spotlight. Gershwin is perhaps best known these days as a songwriter, working as he did for many years, with his brother Ira. Their collaborative work gave rise to some of the most memorable and well-loved songs ever written that has been arranged and covered by a multitude of different artists. Gershwin was also a remarkable piano player and compositional innovator whose passion for the world of Jazz threads through all his work. He studied composition with many respected composers including Henry Cowell but was refused by Nadia Boulanger.

Most of the recordings were made in December 1938 by Decca Records, who were probably aware that a film called The Great Victor Herbert was being made by Paramount Pictures. His studio groups often contained some of the best jazz musicians in New York, including Bunny Berigan, Tommy Dorsey, Jimmy Dorsey, Joe Venuti, Arthur Schutt, Eddie Lang, and others. He used first-rate vocalists, including Paul Small, Dick Robertson, Harlan Lattimore, Smith Ballew, Helen Rowland, Frank Munn, The Boswell Sisters, Lee Wiley and others.

George Gershwin is one of the most important American composers of the 20th century. Born September 26, 1989, in Brooklyn, New York, he did not begin playing piano before the age of 12, but by his mid-teens, he had quit school and was earning a living in music as a song-plugger - pitching sheet music in department stores - on New York’s Tin Pan Alley. This article attempts to retrace the steps of such an artistic evolution via six of his best-known compositions. Having published his first song in 1916, Gershwin reached an early peak with the release of Swanee, with lyrics by Irving Caesar, three years later. An Experiment in Modern Music was also to feature compositions by Irving Berlin and Victor Herbert.

Even Herbert was inclined to view this work as his best effort. It was the goal of this project to recreate the sound of the music played opening night on Broadway and to capture the music that was originally written for Hearts of Erin but discarded during tryouts. Thus, this is the first recording of all existing music that Victor Herbert composed for Hearts of Erin and Eileen. As Hearts of Erin became Eileen, four numbers were replaced with new material. A thorough job of detective work has resulted in this impressive first full-scale recording of Victor Herbert's 1916 operetta, set against the backdrop of Irish rebellions at the end of the eighteenth century. Herbert's felicity for lush melodies is in boundless evidence here. But what might be most extraordinary about his work is how it not only presupposes work by Jerome Kern and George Gershwin, but also draws on Irish airs and even John Philip Sousa.
