Joe South (born Joseph Alfred Souter; February 28, 1940 – September 5, 2012) was an American singer-songwriter, guitarist, and record producer. Best known for his songwriting, South won the Grammy Award for Song of the Year in 1970 for "Games People Play" and was again nominated for the award in 1972 for "Rose Garden". South was also a prominent sideman, playing guitar on Tommy Roe's "Sheila", Bob Dylan's Blonde on Blonde album, and the classic tremolo intro on Aretha Franklin's "Chain of Fools". South played electric guitar on Simon & Garfunkel's second album, Sounds of Silence, although Al Gorgoni and/or Vinnie Bell feature on the title track.

Love is the eponymous debut album by the Los Angeles-based rock band Love, and was released in March 1966 on Elektra Records. Arthur Lee, who was originally from Memphis, Tennessee, but had lived in Los Angeles since he was five, had been recording since 1963 with his bands, the LAG's and Lee's American Four. He had written and also produced the single "My Diary" for Rosa Lee Brooks in 1964 which featured Jimi Hendrix on guitar.

Joe South’s debut album, Introspect, took time to take off – but when it did, it set the music world buzzing. South’s affecting baritone voice (ably supported by his backing singers, The Believers), excellent guitar playing and highly inventive production skills all found full expression on his own project. Other strong tracks include ‘Don’t Throw Your Love To The Wind’ and ‘Birds Of A Feather’, and the love song ‘Don’t You Be Ashamed’, with its iconic 60s lyrics such as, Girl, don’t let the world get you uptight. South possessed the talent to be a global star but he didn’t like to tour, and said of his double Grammy triumph: The Grammy is a little like a crown.
