Play is the fifth studio album by American electronica musician Moby. It was released on May 17, 1999 by Mute and V2 Records. Recording of the album began in mid-1997, following the release of his fourth album, Animal Rights (1996), which deviated from Moby's electronica style; his goal for Play was to return to this style of music. Originally intended to be his final record, the recording of the album took place at Moby's home studio in Manhattan, New York.

The band appeared on the UK show Disco 2 to promote the album. They made three appearances during 1970, performing "Shape of Things to Come", "Know Who You Are" and "Sweet Box". All three performances have never surfaced since broadcasting.
When Play finally got released, Moby wasn’t surprised at all about the poor reception (it sold just 6,000 copies worldwide in the first week and debuted at number 33 on the UK Albums Chart, before sales declined instantly) and the flop of the promotional tour. Whilst the critics had generally approved the album, the artist had huge difficulties in finding a publisher (eventually, V2 Records accepted to release the album), and many journalists refused the invite to the listening sessions. What have the artists said about the album? I had worked on Play for the last two years.
Play is the sixth studio album by the music artist Moby. While some of Moby's earlier work garnered critical and commercial success within the electronic dance music scene, Play was his first true pop success. The album introduced Moby to a worldwide mainstream audience, not only through hit singles, but also through unprecedented licensing of his music in films, television and commercial advertisements. One of the notable aspects of Play, as opposed to other electronic albums of the time, was the way in which it combined old gospel and folk music rhythms with modern house sensibilities.
