War of Words is the debut studio album by English-American heavy metal band Fight, released on September 14, 1993 by Epic Records. This is the first release Rob Halford recorded after his departure from Judas Priest in 1992. He brought with him drummer Scott Travis from the band and recruited three new members. The music is a mixture between the heavy metal sound created by Judas Priest and a thrash/groove sound similar to that of Pantera.

While Fight’s debut album War of Words isn’t necessarily dated, it’s the kind of album that could only be released in the early 90s. Groove metal was picking up, and a post-Vulgar world left seemingly every band trying to keep up. It sure would be easy to accuse Rob Halford of doing similarly. What really separated Halford’s vision from the legions of bandwagoners was his honest-to-god enthusiasm for the style. He developed an affinity for Pantera when the Cowboys from Hell supported Priest on the Painkiller tour, and musicians for Fight were recruited from younger bands developing just under the radar. Halford also wrote the twelve songs on War of Words himself, further reflecting his desire for change and the determination to make it happen himself if necessary. As he once sang on Let Us Prey/Call for the Priest, he knew what he wanted, and he knew where to get it.

Fight - War of Words 12 songs lyrics: Into The Pit, Nailed To The Gun, Life In Black, Immortal Sin, War Of Words, Laid To Rest, For All Eternity, Little Crazy, Contortion, Kill I. .Album (Studio full-length). Heavy Metal, Groove Metal. Epic Records, Sony Music.

War of Words wasn’t all about what was from Judas Priest. It was actually, for the most part, about what Fight did. It definitely seems like the music that pre-ran and influenced today’s heavy metal bands. Fight also establishes more methods of metal music to follow and model it in a neat display of power and passion, and fury. Take the time to pay attention to the deeper heavy metal guitars, dirty riffs, impressive solos, and the singing that Halford does. It all tends to reflect what Fight is about.

In some ways, this could have been a Judas Priest album. Since it was the first disc that Rob Halford worked on after his extended tenure in that group, that is certainly understandable. Clearly, he was most likely still aligned in that musical vein and a lot of the sounds here represent that fact. However, there are definitely some differences. First, you can hear a rawer, almost punk-ish aggressive texture on much of the material ("Nailed to the Gun" comes to mind). Next, Halford shows a wider range of vocal styles here than he did with Priest
