Japanese pianist Satoko Fujii came about this the hard way. That is, she started playing the way you're supposed. This quartet has been playing live together since 1998, and it'll be interesting to see if they continue to release stuff together. There are very few working jazz groups that demand the attention of the rock audience at the moment. This is certainly no slight on today's jazz artists, but it would seem that the demographic gap between jazz and rock is bigger than it was, say, 25 years ago. Fujii is one of a handful of artists (including the aforementioned Zorn, Black, Speed, and Douglas) who would seem to have as many potential fans in the rock world as jazz

Satoko Fujii Quartet ‎– Vulcan. Label: Libra Records (5) ‎– Libra 204-005. Piano – Satoko Fujii. Trumpet, Performer – Natsuki Tamura.

In October 2001, Satoko Fujii released two albums simultaneously: a fourth CD of her trio with Mark Dresser and Jim Black (titled Junction) and this much more surprising CD with a new quartet. Vulcan showcases the pianist and her husband, trumpeter Natsuki Tamura, paired with bassist Takeharu Hayakawa, regular collaborator Kazutoki Umezu, and drummer Tatsuya Yoshida, the dynamo behind the avant-rock maelstrom that is the duo the Ruins. The promises this lineup holds beautifully come to fruition on Vulcan, a clash of avant-garde jazz and free rock.

Fujii is clearly one of the most exciting musicians to come along in a while. Robert Iannapollo, Cadence. Critics and fans alike hail pianist and composer SATOKO FUJII as one of the most original voices in jazz today. A truly global artist, she splits her time between New York and Japan and tours internationally leading several ensembles.

Whatever you call it, this is music that demands close listening, and rewards the effort. Satoko Fujii Quartet: Minerva by Jim Santella, published on April 2, 2003. With its second album, the Satoko Fujii Quartet takes off. Minerva – the Roman goddess of wisdom, invention, the arts, and martial prowess – must surely be looking down from her high abode these days and smiling.
