This production from the outdoor Arena di Verona production, by Brian Large, with Ghena Dimitrova, Cecilia Gasdia, Nicola Martinucci, and Ivo Vinco under Daniel Oren, has the disadvantage compared to the other two versions of the difficulty of recording singers and an orchestra in a spacious outdoor venue that quickly disperses the sound. Where this production scores major points is in its singers
Ghena Dimitrova (Turandot), Nicola Martinucci (Calaf), Cecilia Gasdia (Liù), Graziano Polidori (Ping), Pier Francesco Poli (Pang), Antonio Bevacqua (Pong), Ferruccio Furlanetto (Timur), Giampaolo Corradi (L'imperatore Altoum), Orazio Mori (Un mandarino). From the world-famous Arena of Verona, an international cast perform one of Puccini's best loved operas. The cruel Princess Turandot, ruler of China, will only wed a prince who can answer correctly her three riddles. Those who fail are executed. Orchestra and Chorus of Arena di Verona, Maurizio Arena. Puccini, Giacomo Antonio Domenico Michele Secondo Maria (1858-1924).
Ghena Dimitrova was born in the Bulgarian village of Beglezh, some 25 km from Pleven, in 1941. She started singing in the school choir and her powerful voice led to her being offered a place at the Sofia Conservatory studying under Christo Brambarov between 1959 and 1964. While she was initially classified as a mezzo-soprano, she was recognised as a soprano in her second year. After finishing her studies at the Sofia Conservatory, she started teaching singing. Her Turandot is also preserved in a video of the Arena di Verona production from 1983, with Nicola Martinucci and Cecilia Gasdia. In 1988, she made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York performing the same role. The way the music is written, you need a voice like a trumpet to do it justice.

Martinucci was born in Taranto, Italy. He did not begin studying singing until his 20s. With the encouragement of Mario Del Monaco he studied in Milan with Marcello Del Monaco (Mario's brother) and with Sara Sforni. He made his debut in 1966 at the Teatro Nuovo in Milan as Manrico in Il Trovatore. In 1966 he had won the Viotti International Music Competition which led to further debuts in Italian opera houses.
