Like many of today's jazz pianists, Mozart was a great improviser and some of his examples survive in the written-down form of the fantasia. The new director of the Academy of Ancient Music does a solo turn here, playing three of these spontaneous outpourings alongside other short pieces from Mozart's maturity. The sonic range of the 1805 instrument Egarr uses suits this music perfectly, while his performances offer an entrancing blend of spirit and delicacy. He inherited these forms from Johann Sebastian Bach and, perhaps more importantly, through his sons Carl Philipp and Johann Christian. The brooding opening of the great Fantasie in D minor, K397, gives way to a more light-hearted air.

Richard Egarr has worked with all types of keyboards: he has performed repertoire ranging from fifteenth-century organ intabulations, to Dussek, Schumann and Chopin on early pianos, to Berg and Maxwell Davies on modern piano. He is director of the Academy of the Begijnhof, Amsterdam, and is in great demand both as soloist and as accompanist for many of today’s finest artists. His collaboration with long-time duo partner Andrew Manze has been setting new performance standards since 1984

Richard Egarr is a British conductor and keyboard player, performing on the harpsichord, fortepiano, organ and modern piano. He is the director of the period instrument orchestra the Academy of Ancient Music. He has been appointed as Music Director of the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra. He received his early musical training as a choirboy at York Minster and at Chetham's School of Music in Manchester
