They are best known for their 1976 debut album Right Time produced by Joseph Hoo Kim and the 1979 release Deeper Roots. Formed in 1969 in the Trenchtown area of Kingston, the group comprises lead vocalist Donald "Tabby" Shaw, and harmony vocalists Fitzroy "Bunny" Simpson and Lloyd "Judge" Ferguson

Few reggae bands evoked their audience's suffering as viscerally as the Mighty Diamonds, not least because of lead vocalist Donald "Tabby" Shaw. A strong moralistic undertone runs throughout the album

On Right Time the Mighty Diamonds trade the punchy, soul-influenced sound of their early work for the deep-roots textures of the Channel One house band. The Mighty Diamonds honed their chops during this heady time, cutting a number of remarkable rocksteady sides for producers like Byron Lee and Rupie Edwards, but it was not until they found a home at Joseph Hookim’s Channel One Label that they released Right Time, one of the unquestionable high points of Jamaican Music.
