Located on the Giza Plateau, the Great Sphinx of Giza is one of several monuments in the area, which includes the Giza Necropolis. The Giza Plateau is a sandy plateau in Giza, Egypt that overlooks the West bank of the Nile River. From the north, the first road leads to the pyramids of pharaoh Khufu, while the second comes from the east and leads to the Great Sphinx's forecourt. The roads cross the Nile from the east and continue West. The first modern attempt at digging out the Sphinx came in 1817 AD. This dig completely uncovered the chest of the Sphinx. Restoration of the Sphinx continues today, though some of the restoration masonry employed has done more harm than good.

You might have heard about the Great Sphinx of Giza before, at least in your history textbooks. There are many reasons why this figure is known throughout history, some fascinating, some mysterious. Let us walk you through all the details on why the Sphinx of Giza earned the tag Great to its name. The Great Sphinx of Giza is the world’s largest monolith statue. It measures 2. 2 meters in height, 1. meters in width and 7. meters in length. It was believed to be built about 4500 years ago by the pharaoh. An archeological survey led by Lehner studied that graffiti on the walls of the Sphinx and came to an opinion that the Egyptian ruler didn’t use slaves as his workforce. This was in direct contrast to what many believed.

The Great Sphinx of Giza is a giant 4,500-year-old limestone statue situated near the Great Pyramid in Giza, Egypt. Measuring 240 feet (73 meters) long and 66 feet (20 meters) high, the Great Sphinx is one of the world’s largest monuments. It is also one of the most recognizable relics of the ancient Egyptians, though the origins and history of the colossal structure are still debated.

The word 'sphinx' is Greek and came to be applied to the Egyptian sculpture at Giza, according to Verner (and others) through a translation of the Egyptian name shesep-ankh ("living image") by which the Egyptians referred to the piece as well as to other representations of royal figures. While that may be, it is also quite likely that the statue simply reminded Greek writers of their own mythical sphinx, such as the one famous in the story of Oedipus, with the body of a beast and head of a woman. According to this theory, the great statue was Anubis who traditionally guarded over a necropolis and such a statue would certainly fit the location the Sphinx occupies at Giza. In the 4th century, the Temples claim, the statue was re-carved to depict a lion with a king's head because the lion was a popular figure in zoolatry (the worship of animals) at the time.

A sphinx is a mythical creature with the head of a human and the body of a lion. In Greek tradition, the sphinx has the head of a human, the haunches of a lion, and sometimes the wings of a bird. It is mythicised as treacherous and merciless. Those who cannot answer its riddle suffer a fate typical in such mythological stories, as they are killed and eaten by this ravenous monster. This deadly version of a sphinx appears in the myth and drama of Oedipus
