Biography by Scott Yanow. All-star small jazz band whose music was sophisticated and immaculately played, marked by Milt Jackson's cool vibes.

5 Modern Jazz Quartet albums originally on Atlantic - 3 in their straight-ahead (for them, anyway) vein, and the other 2 working in their "third stream" (the attempt to blend jazz and classical music that had a brief run in this period).

The Modern Jazz Quartet (MJQ) was a jazz combo established in 1952 that played music influenced by classical, cool jazz, blues and bebop. For most of its history the Quartet consisted of John Lewis (piano), Milt Jackson (vibraphone), Percy Heath (double bass), and Connie Kay (drums). The group grew out of the rhythm section of Dizzy Gillespie's big band from 1946 to 1948, which consisted of Lewis and Jackson along with bassist Ray Brown and drummer Kenny Clarke.

A seminal album that defined the fresh sound of a whole new generation in jazz – that "third stream" movement that was different from the cool jazz of the west coast, and the fire of New York! The style here follows that same mix of jazz and higher-concept elements you'd hear on other Modern Jazz Quartet albums for Atlantic – but the music is expanded here with some great help from outside parties too.
