2X4 is the third album by Guadalcanal Diary. It was released in 1987. It was number 64 on Paste Magazine's "The 80 Best Albums of the 1980s", wherein they called it a "masterpiece". Track four, starting with a quiet strum, "Little Birds," is just dark enough and sweet enough to top my list. The first track brings you in to the set with a strong, ringing, singing, forward-moving push that's not only musically very fine, but also will leave your mind with the beauty of this band's intention. This band never put out a bad album and I humbly submit 2x4 is their best. That being said, the release of 2x4 on CD corrects a great music injustice perpetrated by the EMI braintrust who likely thought it was either too regional or too alt to sell(further evidence record company executives have wooden ears separaed by a vacuum). Where to start?? One must first address the great writing.

Guadalcanal Diary is an alternative jangle pop group from Marietta, Georgia. The band formed in 1981 and disbanded in 1989. The band's origins are primarily in the Atlanta, Georgia suburb of Marietta (then a more separate town), though they were often billed as "from Athens, Georgia" in the early 1980s. The group's music was characterized by clear, bright guitar sounds, upbeat rhythms, and Murray Attaway's clear, high tenor.

In 1986, Guadalcanal Diary released its sophomore album, Jamboree, produced by Rodney Mills and Steve Nye. The album's initial reception was not as enthusiastic as their debut effort, with some critics noting a weaker production, but the album has retrospectively gained more appreciation among fans. The band decided to work again with producer Don Dixon for its next album, 2X4, released in 1987.
