West Coast jazz mavericks, The Pyramids, led by their inspirational bandleader, Idris Ackamoor, return with a new album on Strut. The band met while in school in Ohio in the 1970s, where one of their teachers was renowned pianist, Cecil Taylor. Having disbanded in 1977, the group re-united in the 2010s following acclaim for their three independently released 1970s LPs from jazz aficionados and record collectors.

The new studio album from this US west coast band is an impressively fresh-sounding affair, considering that they started in the early 70s, broke up at the end of that decade, and then reformed when it became clear that there was still a demand for their Afro-jazz-funk fusion. Ackamoor developed his style after taking the original band on a lengthy tour of Africa, living in Ghana, Kenya and Ethiopia, and the best tracks here match African influences against the horn solos, as in the furious Rhapsody in Berlin, or the work-out Traponga

I wanted to use folklore, fantasy and drama as a warning bell, explains Ackamoor. but positive themes too, the healing power of music, collective action and the simple beauty of nature. German label Disko B released the freeform album ‘Otherwordly’ and in 2016, they released their first album for Strut, the acclaimed ‘We Be All Africans’. Strut are proud to present the brand new studio album from West coast intergalactic jazz mavericks, The Pyramids, led by their inspirational bandleader, Idris Ackamoor. Alto saxophonist Ackamoor first founded The Pyramids alongside fellow students Margo Simmons (flute) and Kimathi Asante (electric bass) in the summer of 1972. Idris was promptly presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award by DJ Gilles Peterson at his Worldwide Awards and The Pyramids were back, gaining a whole new legion of fans. For their new album, 'We Be All Africans', the group traveled to Berlin to hunker down in Max Weissenfeldt's analogue Philophon studio. The result is a sparkling set of Afro- jazz-funk fusions, from the infectious chants of the title track to the reflective 'Epiphany' and the yearning, mournful future single, 'Silent Days' featuring the brilliant vocals of Bajka.
