Fear is the fourth solo studio album by Welsh musician John Cale, released on 1 October 1974 by Island Records. Fear is the first of Cale's three studio albums for Island Records, all of which were released in a period of just over a year. During this time Cale was also producing records for other artists, working on albums such as Horses by Patti Smith, one of the most influential of all proto-punk records.

John Cale has been a consistently interesting singer/songwriter and avant-garde musician of consequence. His years in The Velvet Underground rightfully established his reputation, while his solo work has proven underrated and very likely to be held in high regard by future generations. The '80s were a tricky period for Cale, as they were for almost every musician of an earlier vintage. Yet Cale handled the era's mechanical drumbeats and icy synths with a mastery far greater than his contemporaries.

Artificial Intelligence was originally titled Black Rose Having produced Nico's solo album Camera Obscura, Cale recorded this album at Strongroom Studios with her backing band, the Faction, with a couple of additional musicians.

Musically, the album sounds a bit dated in its reliance on standard mid-'80s synths and drum machines, but the production is worlds better than it had been on the muddy Caribbean Sunset, with the atmospheric "Every Time the Dogs Bark" and "Chinese Takeaway (Hong Kong 1997)" benefiting the most. Artificial Intelligence is no Paris 1919, but it's an encouraging partial return to form.
