While many of the Puerto Rican bands in the eastern . have favored Afro-Cuban salsa, the two New York-based units heard on this album, Los Pleneros de la 21 and Orchestra Melodia, specialize in the traditional Puerto Rican form known as plena. Comparing Puerto Rico, Puerto Rico to traditional Afro-Cuban music, it becomes clear that the latter has had a much greater influence on popular Puerto Rican salsa groups like El Gran Combo and El Conjunto Clasico.

Luiz Carlos dos Santos (7 January 1951 – 4 August 2017), more commonly known as Luiz Melodia, was a Brazilian actor, singer and songwriter of MPB, rock, blues, soul and samba. Son of samba artist and songwriter Oswaldo Melodia (from whom he inherited his stage name), he grew up in the slum district of São Carlos, in the neighbourhood of Estácio, often referred to as the "Cradle of Samba".
