Fred Dagg is a fictional character from New Zealand created and acted on stage, film and television by satirist John Clarke. Clarke graced New Zealand TV screens as Dagg during the mid to late 1970s, "taking the piss" out of the post-pioneering Kiwi bloke and "blokesses". The Fred Dagg character is a stereotypical farmer and New Zealand bloke: clad in a black singlet and gumboots, hailing from the isolated rural town of Taihape, and attended by numerous associates (or sons) all named "Trev"

Dagg’s 1975 debut album Fred Dagg’s Greatest Hits (Dagg 1) had sides labelled Front and Behind. Some were from short appearances on Lindsay Yeo’s 2ZB breakfast show that were reworked by producer Rick White (formerly guitarist with Tom Thumb). Phone Call’ had appeared on the aforementioned One in Five; the five musical items included ‘We Don’t Know How Lucky We Are’, ‘The National Anthem’, ‘Larry Loves Barry’ (about a fellow who wants to marry his emu) and ‘Medley’.

Death Row: Snoop Doggy Dogg at His Best is the first greatest hits album that includes his hits and also includes 6 never before released songs from Snoop Dogg's Death Row Records days. It was released on October 23, 2001 by Suge Knight. It was re-released on March 20, 2006

Fred Dagg's Greatest Hits remains one of New Zealand's best selling albums. Clarke moved to Australia in 1977, and soon made an impact, particularly in a series of satirical interview slots with Australian writer Bryan Dawe which mocked major Australian politicians. Dagg's Greatest Hits 1976 - releases Gumboots and album Fred Dagg Live 1977 - makes sketch film Dagg Day Afternoon with Geoff Murphy 1977 - moves to Melbourne, Australia, appears as Dagg on Australian radio 1979 - final album, The Fred Dagg Tapes, released 1982 - nominated for Australian Film Institute award for writing work on film Lonely Hearts 1984 - performs as Fred Dagg on Australian satire.

Fred Dagg was his greatest creation and inspired a whole generation of comics and for the first time headlined political current affairs shows pricking the bombast on both sides of the House. Fred and his seven sons all called Trevor went on to create one of New Zealand's all-time best musical sellers with Fred Dagg's Greatest Hits and the iconic song We don't know how lucky we are.
