Do you remember your first time hearing Converge? I remember mine: September 2001, a listening station at a Syracuse record store, maybe a week after Jane Doe came out. And I remember what I thought: something along the lines of what the fuck? This was clearly heavy, intense music, and I knew that I’d be in for that before I pressed play. But what I didn’t understand was how jagged and off-kilter it all was. These amazing riffs would come in, but they’d barely ever repeat, and the songs would spin off into some new direction. Time-signatures would switch up every few seconds.

Opening track Daymare presents Portrayal of Guilt as a fully-formed, versatile and ambitious band, its four minutes and 41 seconds the longest and most epic of any track on this album. By most other band’s standards, particularly in heavy music, that’s nothing, and yet the band packs in enough ideas for a substantial EP into this one track. Then again, for those who heard not just intensity but innovation, melody, songwriting prowess and versatility, those four minutes and 41 seconds are merely the promise of the breadth of heavy music that Let Pain Be Your Guide has to offer.

Unhinged yet masterful, ‘Let Pain Be Your Guide’ will be one of the outstanding pieces amongst heavy music in 2018 and sees the band honing in on something truly unique.

Portrayal of Guilt's Let Pain Be Your Guide comes out Nov. 16. Adrian Glickman/Courtesy of the artist. Note: NPR's First Listen audio comes down after the album is released. However, you can still listen with the Bandcamp playlist at the bottom of the page. Portrayal of Guilt exists in the extremes of hardcore, noise, grindcore, death metal, powerviolence and turn-of-the-century screamo - subgenres of heavy music that typically scream through the pain. On its debut album, the Austin band doesn't just want you to scream, but also to Let Pain Be Your Guide. This album has to do with the different types of pain one may go through when living in and accepting the horrors of reality," guitarist and vocalist Matt King tells NPR Music. Corruption within our own government, witnessing and experiencing clear injustices, 'friends' entering and leaving our lives without reason, the list goes on. It is very personal.

Portrayal of Guilt’s first full length record shows lots of potential. Its blend of post-hardcore, punk and black metal vocals creates a fast, hard-hitting and emotional ride. With a runtime of only 22 minutes consisting out of 10 tracks (8 if you don’t count the small instrumental interludes), it’s an album that goes by fast. Even though it is what you would expect from a punk influenced record, I was surprised when it suddenly ended, as I was expecting more.

Notes

Portrayal of Guilt have carved themselves out as a unique force in the realms of post-hardcore and screamo; their Self-Titled 7” and ‘Chamber of Misery (Pt. I)’ 5” releases are exemplary exercises in intensity, not to mention the razor-sharp assault delivered on their split with industrial-metallers Street Sects.

Their debut full-length sees their discography expanding and intensifying; ‘Let Pain Be Your Guide’ is a visceral, multi-faceted attack that blurs the line between aggressive styles, leaving you emotionally bludgeoned. The record’s musical nihility is akin to Robotic Empire’s discordant output from the likes of Pg.99 and Majority Rule; all of which is blended with a high-octane swell of grindcore-esque riffs. Whether it’s the artillery-fire tracks like ‘A Burden’ and ‘Life Holds Nothing’ or the post-punk suffused ‘Your War’, there are glimpses of warped melodies that diversify the albums unrelenting nature.

Unhinged yet masterful, ‘Let Pain Be Your Guide’ will be one of the outstanding pieces amongst heavy music in 2018 and sees the band honing in on something truly unique. Available through Holy Roar Records and Gilead Media.
