Amanda Shires’ latest solo record, To the Sunset, is rife with charmingly detailed and surprising turns of phrase, but ultimately falls short of its potential effectiveness. The ten tracks comprising this latest album sprint past you rather quickly, which unfortunately doesn’t give you much of a chance to let any lyric or musical turn stick to you. The ultimate rushed feeling of the record ends up overshadowing any of the intriguing ideas and stories introduced within the songs. The album starts strong with Parking Lot Pirouette, a song which, in the best tradition of country-infused songs,.

Album · 2018 · 10 Songs. Nashville-based singer-songwriter and violinist Amanda Shires’ take on Americana is heavy on poetry and introspection. With a breathy, earnest yowl that recalls a young Dolly Parton, Shires sounds commanding on the hurts-to-love-you opener Parking Lot Pirouette and the playful Southern rocker Break Out the Champagne, while producer David Cobb (Sturgill Simpson, Chris Stapleton) shines up her more vulnerable side on Mirror Mirror

3), Amanda Shires quite literally immersed herself in the process. Among clothes, shoes and scraps of paper, Shires holed up and wrote some of the boldest and most adventurous material of her career. Honestly, I think it was just isolation. Just being in a small space - a super small space," Shires tells Wide Open Country. To the Sunset, produced by Dave Cobb, is the follow-up to 2016's My Piece of Land and the fifth studio album from the multi-talented fiddle player who spent her teen years as a member of the Texas Playboys and her early 20s touring the Texas circuit with country legend Billy Joe Shaver.

One of the highlights of Amanda Shires' new album To the Sunset, "Break Out the Champagne" was inspired in part by an in-flight emergency on a plane. adios!" The song swirls various personal calamities into a worldview. If Shires does have a mantra for the album, it might be closer to the message of "Take on the Dark". Her realism stands out – nothing is won, nothing is guaranteed to be okay – but resistance is certainly not futile. Shires' acknowledgment that "it's okay to fall apart" brings an odd comfort to it. Above a driving indie rock sound, Shires moves into the darkness of the world with her listener, not to minimize the hurt, but face it sensibly. Life can be challenging, and platitudes never work.

The rising Americana singer-songwriter flips the script on her ambitious seventh LP, with help from husband Jason Isbell. The album ends with a gut-punch. Wasn’t I Paying Attention is punctured by a searing, Neil Young-conjuring Isbell solo, and chronicles a brutal suicide in a town called Nome.

The most quietly devastating song I heard last year was the one where Jason Isbell starts to come to terms with the idea of death, the one thing that can tear him away from his life. In close harmony, Isbell’s wife, Amanda Shires, sings those exact same words. They’re singing to each other, about each other, and it knocks me out every time

Along with nine new songs on Amanda Shires’ latest album lurks an older gem. Swimmer is a reworked version of a tune she first recorded on her 2010 album Carrying Lightning. It’s also the throughline that belies all the buzz about how To the Sunset represents a radical departure for Shires. Really, her new album is the expansive next step she’s been working toward all along. It is true that Shires has broadened her sonic palette here. There’s much more electric guitar, courtesy of husband Jason Isbell, along with a greater emphasis on organ and keyboards throughout.
