Soul Makossa" is a song released as a single in 1972 by Cameroon saxophonist and songwriter Manu Dibango. It is often cited as one of the first disco records. In 1972, David Mancuso found a copy in a Brooklyn West Indian record store and often played it at his The Loft parties. The response was so positive that the few copies of "Soul Makossa" in New York City were quickly purchased.

Nadea Hey soul makossa Makine Hey soul makossa Mangola wakina Hey soul makossa Mosoma! Hey soul makossa Ynot domo. Tunga tunga umbo te tunga nesa makosa now Makossa makossa makossa makossa makossa Bathaso mosoon Yonse yonse batha yonse makossa. The first time I heard Manu Dibango's "Soul Makossa" was courtesy of Motorcycle Guy, a prominent Brooklyn eccentric who drives around on a tricked-out motorcycle bedecked with lights and equipped with a powerful sound system. I encounter him every so often and he's always bumping some good funk, soul or R&B. What have the artists said about the song? On one side of the 45 I recorded ; on the other I recorded Soul Makossa, written using a traditional makossa rhythm with a little soul thrown in.

Album: Electro Funk, Vol. 2 (1972). A native of Cameroon, Dibango has enjoyed a long career as a musician and songwriter, developing a fusion of Jazz and African musical styles. This song, which came early in his career, was introduced to American listeners by legendary New York City radio DJ Frankie Crocker. This song made the US Top 40 only briefly, but later became notable for 2 reasons. The first is its refrain, "Ma-ma-se, ma-ma-sa, ma-ma-kossa," which Michael Jackson borrowed for his 1983 hit "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'," but without Dibango's permission

This song is by Manu Dibango and appears on the album Soul Makossa (1972) and on the compilation The Disco Years, Volume Three: Boogie Fever (1992).
