Lorez Alexandria, born Dolorez Alexandria Turner (August 14, 1929 – May 22, 2001), was an American jazz and gospel singer, described as "one of the most gifted and underrated jazz singers of the twentieth century". She became established in the midwest before moving to Los Angeles in the mid 1960s. Jazz critics have compared her to Dinah Washington, Sarah Vaughan, Carmen McRae, and Ella Fitzgerald. She released twenty albums over the course of 36 years before retiring.
In 1989, Impulse reissued two of Lorez Alexandria's classic 1964 dates, Alexandria the Great and More of the Great Lorez Alexandria, on a single CD. Impulse was a label that generally did right by Alexandria, and that holds true on both albums. From the choice of material to the producers and musicians, all of the pieces fall into place nicely for Alexandria (who was 35 at the time). Alexandria the Great was produced by the prolific Bob Thiele (known for his work with John Coltrane and countless others), while More of the Great Lorez Alexandria was produced by Tutti Camarata.
