Eddie Henderson (born October 26, 1940) is an American jazz trumpet and flugelhorn player. He came to prominence in the early 1970s as a member of pianist Herbie Hancock's band, going on to lead his own electric/fusion groups through the decade. Henderson earned his medical degree, and worked a parallel career as a psychiatrist and musician, turning back to acoustic jazz by the 1990s. Henderson's influences include Booker Little, Clifford Brown, Woody Shaw, and Miles Davis.

Throughout, the consistent high quality of the solos and the musicianship (even with some off moments) makes one regret that this classic orchestra was not more commercially successful.

The Uncrowned King of Swing: Fletcher Henderson and Big Band Jazz. Yet all together, Armstrong’s published memories of the band leave an at least ambivalent legacy, and they are actually more glowing than bitter.

Fletcher Henderson was a major force in establishing big band music, with accomplished ensembles that included musicians of the quality of Louis Armstrong, saxophonists Coleman Hawkins and Benny Carter, and clarinettist Buster Bailey. In Henderson’s music lay many of the origins of swing, and it is no coincidence that he was later to work as an arranger for the King Of Swing, Benny Goodman. Henderson’s bands were pioneers in getting harmonised arrangements to work for large groups of musicians. The height of the swing era was between the years 1935 to 1940, and many jazz bandleaders enjoyed huge success, none more so than Goodman, a dazzling clarinet player. It was also a time when radio audiences were at their peak and stations needed fresh music to help fill their schedules.
