Kind of a Drag" was written by Chicago-based songwriter Jim Holvay, who had been performing with a group called the Mob, and spent two weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 in February 1967. It sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc. The co-producers of "Kind of a Drag" were the band's first personal manager, Carl Bonafede, and big band leader Dan Belloc, owner of the Holiday Ballroom in Chicago. The Buckinghams released their first Christmas album on the BML label, The Joy of Christmas, in November 2008. In December 2008, the Buckinghams debuted the single "Have a Little Faith" on WGN-TV in Chicago. In 2009, the Buckinghams performed at the Bipartisan Illinois Agricultural Ball for the inauguration of President Barack Obama.

Kind of a Drag" was written by Jim Holvay, who was a friend of the band's from Chicago. It is The Buckingham's only hit, although they peeked into the Top 10 twice more and charted a couple more times after that. Holvay went on to write "Don't You Care," "Susan" and "Hey Baby They're Playing Our Song" for The Buckinghams. The Buckinghams had five charting hits, and they all occurred in 1967, prompting Billboard magazine to declare them "the most-listened-to band of the year. Michael from Mcfarland, WiTheir debut album on USA is really amazing! One of the best lp efforts from this era. Features rocking organ instrumentals, a James Brown cover, fuzz guitar - it can't be beat!

Given its source, Kind of a Drag was one of the most extraordinary albums of the 1960s.

The Buckinghams first disc is unlike anything they would ever record again. Sure, the title track was a bubblegum smash but the rest of the LP is given over to garage, blue-eyed soul, blues, and British Invasion influenced pop. It’s all good too, sung beautifully and played very tightly. These two tracks alone make Kind of a Drag worth a purchase. Sweets For My Sweet is also given a nice garage pop reading with it’s raw guitar work and smooth organ sounds. Even the album’s one instrumental, Virginia Wolf, is skillfully performed, in fact the whole album is very engaging, lacking any weak spots or noticeable mistakes. There’s lots of energy, thought and professionalism put into this music – these guys must have been one hell of a club band back in the day.
