While Vee is about as rock ‘n’ roll as capri pants, he has a few bullet points on his resume worth mentioning. Hail! Hail! Rock 'n' Roll is an album by Chuck Berry and soundtrack to the film of the same name, which was released in 1987 under record label, MCA. The album was recorded live at The Fox Theatre, St Louis, Missouri and Berry Park, Wentzville, Missouri on October 6 and October 16, 1986. The event was held to celebrate Berry's 60th birthday and it included several special guests.

Bobby Womack is a stalwart soul and gospel figurehead whose résumé includes significant contributions across the decades as a singer, songwriter and guitarist. The son of a steelworker, he was born in Cleveland, where he and his siblings formed a gospel group at a young age. While touring with the Soul Stirrers, the Womack Brothers met that group’s lead singer, Sam Cooke. After Cooke’s move from gospel to soul, he contacted the Womacks and asked them to move to California. Bobby Womack was only 16 years old at the time, and he dropped out of school  . He cut an album with jazz guitarist Gabor Szabo, too. Recording under his own name, Womack scored a string of minor hits toward the end of the Sixties.

On Rock ‘n’ Roll, John Lennon does nothing but interpret old rock. The Beatles didn’t care whether they got the music right so long as they got the feeling. Lennon can recreate the music correctly ( Be-Bop-A-Lula ), but never catches the feeling. The most revealing failure comes on Bobby Freeman’s Do You Want to Dance. The song stands for all the gems left behind by rock’s minor heros - there’s no logic to anyone as limited as Bobby Freeman writing anything so great. But more than he misses the point of Chuck Berry and Little Richard, Lennon misses the point of this kind of rock - the stuff that sounds almost anonymous, like anyone could sing it, music whose simplicity is its greatest strength.

In retrospect, Rock 'N' Roll represents Lennon's last blast with the music that shaped him. It's also a final chance to hear one of rock's greatest figures coming to terms with his Beatles past on an album his old band probably would have made had they stuck around a while longer.
