Shape of Things to Come is the fifth studio album by American guitarist George Benson, released in 1968 and arranged by Don Sebesky. It was his first album for A&M Records and his first album to be produced by Creed Taylor, who would remain his producer until 1976. After four years and three different labels, Benson signed with the A&M/CTI label in 1968. He was to be the replacement for their star Wes Montgomery, who had died earlier in the year.

This A&M/CTI debut album by George Benson signaled the arrival of a true star in the jazz scene. Creed Taylor signed Benson immediately after Wes Montgomery's passing in 1968 - he was being groomed for it by Verve's house producer, Esmond Edwards, and arranger, Tom McIntosh, before he ever came to CTI. Taylor paired Benson with arranger Don Sebesky (who had done plenty of work on Montgomery's A&M sides) and engineer Rudy Van Gelder. Footin' It 4:22 02. Face It Boy, It's Over 4:04 03. Those who go further back with Benson's music than I do know that Shape of Things To Come is more apt as a title for this album than most people suspected at the time of its initial release. For it is here that Benson's musical personality starts to come into its own, bearing on nimble fingers promises of a future greatness. That is evident in his play. Issued on vinyl as A&M SP 3014, CTI series, in 1968, this album demonstrates how Benson was influenced by the late Wes Montgomery but was already developing individual flair. This is the second CD reissue, the first being 0803 in the A&M digi-pack jazz series back in 1988. Unfortunately many of the great albums in that series haven't been seen since.
