Frances Blaisdell (January 5, 1912 – March 11, 2009) was an American flautist, widely recognized as one of the first female professional flautists. She held positions with the National Orchestral Association, the New Opera Company and the New Friends of Music. a b c d Williams, Barbara Highton (Fall 2005). Frances Blaisdell, a flutist who played her way into what was then the male world of orchestral music, becoming one of the early women to play a woodwind instrument with the New York Philharmonic, died on March 11 in Portola Valley, Calif. She was 97. Her son, John, announced her death. She also taught generations of leading flutists. I had lots of opportunities because I was sort of a freak, and people couldn’t imagine a girl flutist, she said in an interview printed in The Flutist Quarterly in 2005.

Frances Blaisdell is typically celebrated as a pioneering woman musician, one who led the way for her gender in this or that male-dominated realm of serious music. While this characterization is accurate and socially quite relevant today, it may lead some to overlook her larger achievement: Blaisdell was a virtuoso flutist who would have enjoyed fame in the music world, even if she hadn't blazed trails and opened doors. Among many firsts in her career, she was the first woman admitted to the Institute of Musical Art, the forerunner of the Juilliard School

The daughter of two preeminent woodwind players - Alexander Williams, principal clarinetist of the NBC Symphony and celebrated flutist Frances Blaisdell - Alexandra Hawley studied flute with the distinguished teachers Murray Panitz of the Philadelphia Orchestra and Jean-Pierre Rampal. Ms. Hawley launched her professional career in two of the world's more prominent concert halls: she made her European debut at Amsterdam’s famed Concertgebouw and her American debut at Carnegie Recital Hall in New York City. Hawley has produced and performed in dozens of AVEDIS concerts, gaining a depth and breadth of hands-on chamber music experience unsurpassed among flutists.
