Bloomfield was, of course, a seminal influence in rock guitar, especially in the resusitation of the blues in popular American music. Kooper was his equal (and was the inspiration for the original Chicago Transit Authority, which morphed into Chicago).

In May 1968, both Al Kooper and Michael Bloomfield found themselves in strange positions. Kooper - who had played the distinctive organ hook on Bob Dylan’s Like a Rolling Stone before joining the Blues Project and then forming Blood, Sweat & Tears - had left BS&T and was serving as an A&R man for Columbia Records. Bloomfield - who had played with Kooper on several Dylan sessions and had come to prominence as a member of the Paul Butterfield Blues Band - had just left his band the Electric Flag. It was a good time to reconnect. And with that, the seeds for what became the Super Session album were sown. The record, which captured two Kooper-helmed jam sessions (one with Bloomfield, the other with Stephen Stills), hit No. 12 on the Billboard 200 albums chart, went gold and sparked a supergroup movement that inspired acts like Blind Faith and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.
