Actor is the second album by musician St. Vincent, released by 4AD on May 4, 2009, in the United Kingdom and a day later in the United States. The first single released was "Actor out of Work" that April. Annie Clark was influenced by scores to films by Disney and Woody Allen. After arranging the music using GarageBand, she then wrote lyrics and added gentle vocal melodies.

In her heaviest, most warped riffs, Clark finds the grace in her subjects' frustration and purges their fear and repressed anger with a glorious, singular noise. In "Actor Out of Work", an atypically straightforward rock song early in the album's sequence, Clark uses the title phrase as a sad epithet for an inappropriate yet attractive suitor with an inability to lie convincingly. Acting, of course, is a lot more than just lying and pretending.

If the portrait on the cover of Annie Clark's first album as St. Vincent, 2007's Marry Me, made lovelorn denizens of the indieverse, female and male alike, forget about Joanna Newsom for a bit and moon over the striking Oklahoman instead, the music behind the face was even more beguiling. Lyrically astute and sonically unconventional, after listening to Marry Me its cover shot came to seem like subversion of a sort: this was a work of substance, not just another album by a mediocrity with a guitar and cheekbones.

When St. Vincent (née Annie Clark) released her 2007 debut, Marry Me, she came with an impressive résumé: work with Sufjan Stevens and The Polyphonic Spree, an education from Berklee and an impressive EP the year before. It was as if indie fans had gone the Dr. Frankenstein route and created their ideal musician. Naturally, with all this promise going for Clarke, those of us anticipating her debut feared we would suffer our own Promethean fate. Then Marry Me was released and it was. pretty damn good, actually. The album’s first single, Actor Out of Work, barely crosses the two-minute mark and has a stronger rhythm than all of Clark’s previous work combined. Quick drums and smooth vocals act as a support to distorted guitars. Clark admonishes, You’re a supplement, you’re a salve, You’re a bandage, pull it off, I can quit you, cut it out.

Actor ‎(CD, Album, Promo, Dig). Can some one help me merge this version in to the main "Actor" page? I can't seem to figure out how to do it. Thanks! Reply Notify me Helpful.

On St. Vincent’s debut, Marry Me, Clark balanced beautiful, Kate Bush-like art pop arrangements with a dark sense of humor, but on Actor, musically, she plays up her more sinister side.

Vincent's work has received consistent praise for its distinct musical style, which blends soft rock, experimental rock, electropop, and jazz influences. Her debut album was Marry Me (2007), followed by Actor (2009) and Strange Mercy (2011). She released a collaborative album with David Byrne in 2012 titled Love This Giant. Clark also contributed backing vocals for Swans on their 2014 album, To Be Kind  . St. Vincent and Marry Me (2007). Strange Mercy (2011). Vincent (2013–present).

The follow-up to St. Vincent's (Annie Clark's) first album "Marry Me" (2007) features eleven new songs, all written and arranged by Clark. The arrangements are more masterful, the songwriting grander, the performances ever more confident and inspired. Other highlights include the gentle sounding but biting hard lyrics "Laughing With a Mouth of Blood", and the closing two tracks: the epic "Just the Same But Brand New" ( at 5+ min. the longest track here) and the short "The Sequel", which sounds open-ended and summarizes the album nicely, inviting us for the next serving of St. Vincent.
