Yehudi Menuhin - Mendelssohn - Beethoven - Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra - Philharmonia Orchestra - Wilhelm Furtwängler ‎– Concerto In E Minor, Romances 1&2. Beethoven: Violin Concerto in D, Mendelssohn: Violin Concerto in E Minor. Ludwig van Beethoven. Beethoven, Mendelssohn: Violin Concertos (Violin Concerto in D Major, Op. 61, Violin Concerto in E Minor, Op. 64). Menuhin made two studio recordings of Beethoven's Violin Concerto with Furtwängler, and the later one, with the Philharmonia Orchestra in April 1953, all but eclipsed this one, from August 1947 with the Lucerne Festival Orchestra

61, Violin Concerto in E Minor, Op. 64)), and although the remake all but eclipsed the first essay in the LP era, I find the Lucerne version marginally better, sonically equivalent to its successor in Testament's stupendous transfer if not marginally better, nearly identical to it interpretively in the outer movements but with a more held-back and deeply-felt Larghetto. Menuhin and Furtwängler also recorded the two Violin Romances, the day after their Philharmonia recording of the Concerto, and it would make a perfect filler to it, but in fact it was reissued as a complement to the Testament reissue of the earlier Lucerne version. There, their typically deliberate approach and Furtwängler's overblown orchestral textures didn't work so well, solemnizing and sentimentalizing this unassuming music, especially in Op.

Beethoven had previously written a number of pieces for violin and orchestra. At some point in 1790–2, before his musical maturity, he began a Violin Concerto in C, of which only a fragment of the first movement survives. Whether the work, or even the first movement, had ever been completed is not known. In any event, it was neither performed nor published. Later in the 1790s, Beethoven had completed two Romances for violin – first the Romance in F and later the Romance in G.

Beethoven Violin Concerto Mendelssohn Violin Concerto. Itzhak Perlman (vn) Philharmonia Orchestra, Carlo Maria Giulini; bLondon Symphony Orchestra, André Previn. EMI 965923-2 (73' · ADD/DDD) Recorded 1972, 1980. This is a very distinguished performance, as much from Giulini as from Perlman. Romances Nos 1 & 2. Gidon Kremer (vn) Chamber Orchestra of Europe, Nikolaus Harnoncourt. Warner Elatus 3-2 (57' · DDD) Recorded live 1992. Furtwängler and Menuhin recorded the Beethoven Concerto on two occasions and this second version has an extraordinary quality of spirituality and profundity. Furtwängler’s conducting of the opening tutti has a magnificently arresting, weighty quality, and Menuhin’s response, profound and rich in recreative imagination, shows the two great artists in perfect accord.
