Hats is the second studio album by Scottish band The Blue Nile, originally released on 16 October 1989 on Linn Records and A&M Records. It also became the band's most successful album, reaching number 12 on the UK album charts and spawning three singles: "The Downtown Lights", "Headlights on the Parade", and "Saturday Night".

I eventually replaced the cassette with a CD, which was even better. Every song on the album is excellent. The lyrics and music are gut-wrenching.

After 'Hats' the Blue Nile largely abandoned the synth heavy approach for a more traditional guitar led sound, one that's never less than pleasant but can't help but come over as far less subtle and distinctive. The temptation is to be overly critical and begrudge the band for not attempting to follow up 'Hats' with something equally unconventional but really, with the gift of hindsight, everything about the album screams 'one off cult affair'; an album for the musical obsessive if you like
