Irish harpist Derek Bell's solo album of compositions by the great bard Turlough O'Carolan is one of the more important documents of traditional Celtic music. Now that the venerable Claddagh label has been taken under Atlantic's wing, there's been a steady stream of reissues, none more welcome than this one. Many of these tunes will be familiar to lovers of Irish music; "Sheebeg and Shemore," "Carolan's Receipt," and "Planxty George Brabazon" are all standards

Irish harpist Derek Bell's solo album of compositions by the great bard Turlough O'Carolan is one of the more important documents of traditional Celtic music. Many of these tunes will be familiar to lovers of Irish music; "Sheebeg and Shemore," "Carolan's Receipt," and "Planxty George Brabazon" are all standards  . On several tracks Bell is accompanied by other members of the Chieftains.

Other recordings featuring The Chieftains: 1971 The Drones and the Chanter (feat. solo tracks from Paddy Moloney). 1972 Gulliver’s Travels Paul McCartney and Mick McGear. 1973 The Castle Céilí Band (feat. Seán Keane and Michael Tubridy). 1975 Tin Whistles Paddy Moloney and Seán Potts. Ommadawn Mike Oldfield with contributions from Paddy Moloney. Gusty’s Frolics Sean Keane. Carolan’s Receipt Derek Bell. The Bothy Band – The First Album feat. 1976 Old Hag you have Killed Me feat. Watermark Art Garfunkel feat. 1977 Jig it in Style Seán Keane

Derek Bell, who has died aged 66 following minor surgery, was the harpist - and the only Ulsterman - with the Irish music group, the Chieftains. He was equally renowned as a classical performer. Born in Belfast, he was surrounded by music from the age of two, when a misdiagnosis of imminent blindness led his parents to compensate by giving him a musical environment. His path first crossed with the Chieftains in Belfast in 1972, when the group recorded a television performance, with the BBC orchestra, of Carolan's Concerto, by the blind, 18th-century Irish harpist Turlough O' Carolan. Captivated by Bell's playing, the Chieftains' leader, Paddy Moloney, booked him for guest appearances - Moloney said later that "the introduction of the harp completed the sound that I had always wanted to achieve".

Derek Bell recorded Carolan's Receipt in 1975, the same year he joined the Chieftains. This was one of the first LPs devoted to the music of the blind harper Turlough O'Carolan, and it helped to introduce his music to the world. The selections include "Sídh Beag agus Sídh Mór," the first melody O'Carolan composed, as well "Carolan's Farewell to Music," which was his last. Bell plays most of the pieces on the solo harp, although his new bandmates accompany him on a few tunes. 7. Ruisg, A Bhean Na Tabhairne (Carolan's Quarrel With The Landlady)/Carolan's Ramble To Cashel. 8. Mrs. Poer Or Carolan's Concerto. 9. Sean O Conchubhair (John O'Connor)/A H-Uisci Chroidhe Na N-Anamann (The Ode To Whiskey). This is a glorious album of tunes by a lost and forgotten genius. Carolan was a (fairly famous in his day) composer of the 17th century who was like no other.

Carolan's Receipt For Drinking. Carolan's Quarrel With The Landlady. Carolan's Ramble To Cashel. Carolan's Farewell To Music.
