Discrete (4-4-4) formats. Discrete reproduction is the only true quadraphonic system. In 1976, Mike Thorne created the vinyl album Quadrafile, with the same music recorded on all four sides, but in four different quadraphonic formats (QS, SQ, CD-4, and UD-4). The rise of home theatre products in the late 1980s and early 1990s brought multi-channel audio recording back into popularity, although ultimately in new digitally based formats. In 1972, the first commercial disk systems for surround sound, at that time using four speakers and called ‘quadraphony’, were introduced. Four competing systems wound up fighting it out in the market place, resulting in the eventual alienation of the listening public.
