It was the first album to feature drummer Nicko McBrain, who had recently left the Paris-based band Trust and has been Iron Maiden's drummer ever since.

Founded in Leyton in London's East End in 1975, Iron Maiden released their first album in 1980 as a five-piece with Paul Di'Anno on vocals. Bruce Dickinson would replace him in 1981. With several line-up changes Steve Harris would remain the only original member never to have had a hiatus.

Album opener "Where Eagles Dare" is the other flight song, recounting a WWII spy thriller and featuring one of McBrain's signature performances with the band. If much of Piece of Mind ranks as state-of-the-art heavy metal, it is true that the second half dips a bit from the first.
