The album's title gives away the major theme, telling us that this is Beck at his most paranoid and tense. A pulsing bassline introduces the album's opening track, "Orphans," and then a few seconds in a tinny, distant piano and a hauntingly eerie synth line bursts forward alongside some guitar.
Though Modern Guilt is more direct and consistent than his last two scattershot LPs, it also finds the disillusioned . hippie struggling to balance his deathly outlook with his more crowd-pleasing inclinations. It wasn't always like this. At his creative peak Beck tackled everything from R&B to hip-hop to folk, and more often than not, his songs' sentiments matched their styles. Elsewhere, Beck pushes his happy/sad dichotomy to its breaking point. Gamma Ray" combines a beach-party beat with ecological updates ("If I could hold hold out for now/ With these icecaps melting down") and a call for nuclear annihilation. The title track comes on with plenty of Spoon-esque strut and swagger only to dwell on collective insecurities: "Don't know what I've done but I feel ashamed.

I feel uptight when I walk in the city I feel so cold when I'm at home Feels like everything's starting to hit me I lost my bearings ten minutes ago. Modern guilt, I'm stranded with nothing Modern guilt, I'm under lock and key Misapprehension Is turning into convention Don't know what I've done but I feel ashamed. Standing outside the glass on the sidewalk These people talk about impossible things And I'm falling out of the conversation And I'm a pawn piece in a human shield.
Modern Guilt finds him questioning what the soul is made of, wondering if his prayers can be answered and generally putting himself through the karmic rehab required for understanding the Supreme Being. On the opener, Orphans, he even imagines that, if God exists, he might be due for a visit. If I wake up and see my maker coming, Beck sings, with all of his crimson and his iron desire/We’ll drag the streets with the baggage of longing/To be loved or destroyed/From a void to a grain of sand in your hand. Taken as a whole, the album’s first five songs stand among Beck’s strongest work. The most dazzling example is Chemtrails, which nods through a heroin haze of droning guitars while Beck imagines jets flying above a sea full of dead people. The song title comes from a conspiracy theory that holds that some jet trails are actually chemical sprays engineered by the government for secret purposes.
Modern Guilt was the final release in Beck's contract with Geffen Records. Beck, then 38, had held the contract since his early 20s. Released from his label contract and going independent, Beck began working more heavily on his own seven-year-old label, which went through a variety of names. His focus on smaller, more quixotic projects, Beck moonlighted as a producer, working with artists such as Charlotte. Gainsbourg, Thurston Moore and Stephen Malkmus
