Global Radio has signed former Radio 1 and 1 Xtra DJ Ras Kwame to host a Sunday show on Choice, featuring up-and-coming homegrown talent. Ras started his show on Sunday 30th December, and aims to play some of the biggest names from the UK’s hip-hop and R&B scene. The Urban Music DJ started his career as a club DJ in the early 90s, moving on to promote events Starlight Club and Subterranea Club and has created a number of party anthems including ‘Over Here’ featuring Ritchie Dan and ‘Bump and Grind’ featuring Lady Saw. Before his first show, Ras said: I’ve always loved listening to Choice.

Jamaican DJ KickRaux and Ras Kwame releases their upbeat track Feelin U with help from Ayo Jay, Demarco, Doctor and Tyga. I got my introduction to electronic and world music through a mix show Ras Kwame used to do that I would listen to in my summers abroad in London, KickRaux says. He’s from Ghana and I’m from Jamaica so we came up with the concept of bringing together all of the sounds of the Caribbean, afrobeats, soca and electronic music in one project.
Kwamé Holland (born 1973) is an American rapper and record producer from Queens, New York. Originally starting out as a rapper in the early 1990s, Holland later sought greater success with behind the scenes work as a producer. In 1989, aged 16, Kwamé released his debut album, Kwamé the Boy Genius: Featuring a New Beginning, which he also produced with the aid of Hurby "Luv Bug" Azor. The 'A New Beginning' of the title refers to his backing band, which was unusual amongst emcees of the time.

The first production meeting between DJ Ras Kwame, producer Louise Kattenhorn and programme assistant Hermeet Chadha. It feels a little strange. Ras is never content with just one project. After developing a reputation as a DJ, he founded the Sugar Shack record shop in 1993 and a year later Baby Shack Recordings. Since 2002, he has been helping to break acts from Skinnyman to Estelle on 100% Homegrown, a laid-back but authoritative show that is respected by the industry as well as the public. Last year, Rob released an album as Lazyboy, featuring Estelle, Roddy Frame and Lee 'Scratch' Perry; last September, he launched Bestival, Sunday Best's debut festival on the Isle of Wight. Like Ras, Rob knows it's a challenge to replace someone as iconic as John Peel.
