Joan Baez is the self-titled debut album by folk singer Joan Baez. The album was recorded in the summer of 1960 and released the same year. The original release featured 13 traditional folk songs. Later reissues included three additional songs.

Baez's first album, made up primarily of traditional songs (including a startling version of "House of the Rising Sun"), was beguiling enough to woo even listeners.

Joan Baez spent the past six decades tirelessly fighting for social justice. Why stop now? On Thursday, Nov 15, the 77-year-old folk icon paused during her sold-out farewell concert at the Masonic in San Francisco to read some of her thoughts about the state of the world, paying special tribute to the victims of the wildfires that continue to blanket California. Wearing an all-black suit that contrasted starkly with her silver hair, she never quite acknowledged the weight of the moment, avoiding anything resembling a big goodbye (her tour, which stops in Oakland this weekend, is scheduled to come to a close in New York in May). But the 100-minute show revealed a sly self-referential streak.

Joan Baez in Concert, Part 1 is a live album taken from Joan Baez's 1962 concert tours. It peaked at on the Billboard Pop Albums chart. It was Baez's version of "Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You" that brought the song to Jimmy Page and Robert Plant's attention; the song is now more commonly associated with Page and Plant's band Led Zeppelin. Malvina Reynolds' "What Have They Done to the Rain" (about nuclear fallout) was the first "topical" song Baez ever recorded.

Recorded in just 4 days, the album sounds a lot like the live sets she was doing at the time, backed only by her own lovely, precise, often underrated guitar (an additional guitar appears on just a few tracks). The spare accompaniment makes the most of her gift: that startling soprano, piercing, pure, and almost unbearably clear. It's all quite unstylish these days - Baez is cool, formal, and sincere where we like our folksingers warm and intimate - but the power of the instrument can't be denied. In stunning interpretations of tunes like "Silver Dagger," "All My Trails," and the Child ballad "Mary Hamilton," Baez sounds sorrowful, tender, and bitter by turns, and her command of vocal dynamics - the way that voice can swoop from delicate to powerful in the course of a single phrase - makes these often stiff, stoic traditional songs unexpectedly expressive and moving.
