Album · 1974 · 10 Songs. On Nightbirds, producer Allen Toussaint adorns Patti LaBelle's powerful voice-a soulful cry that fills every word with drama-with rich New Orleans instrumentation. While simple piano lines ground the songs, boisterous horns match both the singer's volume and her expressive ability. The combination foretold disco: Generations have now danced to the steady groove of glamorous opener "Lady Marmalade," and the funk empowerment jam "What Can I Do for You?" builds to a euphoric climax well-suited to the end of an after-hours bash.

The finest of Labelle's original albums, Nightbirds was recorded in New Orleans with funkmeister Allen Toussaint handling the production chores and, one assumes, members of the Meters taking care of the session work. Worth the price of admission for the Bob Crewe-written "Lady Marmalade" alone, the album veers between the strutting New Orleans, horn-laden singles and more mainstream pop material. Tracklist: 01. The album brought international fame to Labelle. The brilliant voices of the three band members, Patti LaBelle, Sarah Dash and Nona Hendryx were praised for mixing their R&B pop sound with elements of rock and funk. The success of the album helped to pioneer the disco movement and influenced dance music for decades. In 2003 the album was listed as one of Rolling Stone magazine's 500 greatest albums of all time.
