Rufus Wainwright is the eponymous debut studio album by Canadian-American singer-songwriter Rufus Wainwright, released in the United States on May 19, 1998 through DreamWorks Records. The album was produced by Jon Brion, with the exception of "In My Arms", which was produced and mixed by Pierre Marchand, and "Millbrook" and "Baby", which were produced by Brion and Van Dyke Parks. Lenny Waronker was the album's executive producer.

I say this first because if you want pop candy to listen to mindlessly while you're working out, check out Mandy Moore or Britney Spears. Wainwright's music is like a fine old brandy-some people may not enjoy it, but true connisseurs know its worth. This album is the composer's most brilliant of his three. Of his albums, Poses is the easiest to like. This one is the hardest, but most worth the effort.

Rufus Wainwright’s third album, Want One is just such a graduation. His sophomore album, Poses showed signs of brilliance in such songs as Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk and his father’s One Man Guy. But Want One stands high above his previous work and is sure to break Mr. Wainwright into stardom. Bjork, U2/Passengers, Neil Finn).

Rufus Wainwright croons and cries through another set of obscenely lush and opulent pop operettas on his third album Want One. As is to be expected, the songs are meticulously layered and richly textured, with full orchestral passages and many-throated harmonies. Producer Marius deVries (Björk, Massive Attack, Madonna) didn't mess with the already successful Wainwright sound, allowing for the young singer/ trumentalist to explore his familiar themes of love, loss, and "singin' about places" with the anticipated fanfare and flourish.

Rufus Wainwright is a soldier! He's fashioned as a forlorn knight of yore on this record's cover, brandishing a three-foot iron sword, and shrouded in medieval battle armor. But this image misleads: Want One is more a drove casting of arrows than any detailed fencing bout with mythical demons and fire-breathing dragons. The record is something of cinematic effort, composed of roughly half of the material recorded over the course of six months' studio time that yielded thirty-odd products of his unique musical vision
