The 1984 ECM album Tabula Rasa was the vehicle that introduced the revolutionary music of Arvo Pärt to audiences outside Eastern Europe and initiated what was to become one of the most extraordinary musical careers of the late 20th century. Like many of the first generation American minimalists, he limited himself to diatonic harmonies and generated pieces by setting processes in motion, but the radical simplicity he achieved was the result of religious contemplation that was at least as, if not more, formative than his quest for a new musical aesthetic.

Pärt found a broad audience with this groundbreaking 1984 release, which was overseen by visionary classical and jazz producer Manfred Eicher and released on the newly formed ECM New Series label. Combining the stark beauty of early music with contemporary minimalism, the recording brings "Fratres" in two forms-a haunting piano and violin duet performed by Keith Jarrett and Gidon Kremer and a swirling arrangement played by 12 Cellists of the Berlin Philharmonic.

By its literal translation, 'Tabula rasa' is the theory that individuals are born without built-in mental content (a blank slate, if you will - knowledge that is derived from experience and perception). This concept can be traced back to writings as early as the Western philosopher, Aristotle, in what could very well be the first book on psychology in the Western Canon, titled De Anima. As political ideologies have divided individuals, the idea of the mind being a ‘blank slate’ has always been met with polarizing opinions. On one end of the spectrum tabula rasa, by implication, shows that innate differences in the mind cannot exist, making controversial topics like racism seem completely illogical. The other side of the spectrum is that differences in people are inherited through genetics.
