I love Guantanamo! the ending rubbed me the wrong way at first, but it's quite appropriately abrupt. George Graphy The first half of this album is quite pleasant, bringing something new to the table, the second half is way too laid back for my tastes.

Dark Energy, the first album from Gary, Ind. producer Jlin, hints at this idea of combativeness, bending all matter of percussion, vocal clips and pre-existing ideas about footwork into submission. Jlin’s talked about the mediocrity that can result from working from a happy place, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t some joy at work in her music-it’s found in the process of creating and, for listeners, in the release of the dancefloor. Dark Energy has all the hallmarks of footwork-its frenzied pacing, arrhythmic kick drums, a graphic command of blank space-executed with clear-eyed self-determination. This gives the album an opaque, thoughtful quality. It's Jlin’s first release, centered around a track that first went live in 2010 ("Erotic Heart"), which means she’s had time to think about what she’s doing and, more importantly, what she is not doing.

Jlin - Dark Energy It's either convenient or very clever that Jlin's first widely released track was called "Erotic Heat. Eroticism-the libidinal urge, trapped and amplified so that it smoulders-is one of the defining characteristics of her music. The other is darkness, and the two come together in Dark Energy's cover image: a chunk of rock, black and raw and smoking, as if squeezed out of the earth under incredible heat and pressure. Jlin's debut album builds satisfyingly on the promise of "Erotic Heat. That breakout track is here, sounding as weird and compelling as ever. Its sexual charge surfaces elsewhere too: in the breathy interjections that soften portentous opener "Black Ballet," and in the vocal refrain of "So High," a maddening loop expressing caged, desperate desire rather than euphoric release.

Must have been really pissed off when she made a lot of these tracks, because it is dark and angry. Reply Notify me 7 Helpful.

Her album Dark Energy is so called because of where it came from and how it came to be; the dark monolith on the cover also perfectly encapsulates it – This album took my entire life to make. Every moment in my life lead up to this album. My musical sense of expression comes from sadness, and anger. I can't create from a happy place. Jlin has been supported by all the key players in the Footwork scene and says she is thankful to many. 2015 feels like the year people are ready for a new voice in Footwork and Jlin is a true original with a hard, yet infectious style and an album that showcases it brilliantly.

Talk about Jlin - Dark Energy

Maridor
I'm really digging this record from Jlin, she captures a unique vibe with her own blend of ghettotech/electro/crunk flavors. The rhythm programming and song production are ultra smooth and nuanced, constantly bringing on a headnod. These are some serious fresh dope beats from a newcomer, and i can't wait to hear what she does next.
