Though Magnolia Electric Co. and Pyramid Electric Co. were originally intended as a double album, the latter seems to be the stylistic polar opposite of the former. Engineered by Mike Mogis, who also engineered Ghost Tropic, Pyramid found Molina alone at the microphone with only his voice, a piano or a guitar. It is not entirely clear when Songs: Ohia became Magnolia Electric Co. In interviews, Jason Molina claimed that he considered the tenure of Songs: Ohia over after Didn't It Rain, which would make Magnolia Electric Co. the eponymous debut album under the new name. The name "Songs: Ohia" appears nowhere on the artwork of the album and only a promotional sticker on the cellophane wrapping connects it with the prior name. Nevertheless, Secretly Canadian still promotes the album under the Songs: Ohia moniker.

The Magnolia Electric Co. is the seventh regular and final album by Songs: Ohia. It was recorded by Steve Albini at Electrical Audio in Chicago and released by Secretly Canadian on March 4, 2003. Delusions of Adequacy called it "a watershed album, an artistic breakthrough, and the first album to fully realize Molina's potential.

But nowhere is it more visible than on Magnolia Electric C. the seventh Songs: Ohia album. The assured, denim-clad, '70s rock feel of the album positions it on the dark edge of town, in the neighborhood of Bruce Springsteen, John Mellencamp, and Bob Seger. But these are no bombastic anthems like the songs of those populist rousers.

Many of the songs on Magnolia Electric Co. have distinct country influences in addition to their blues/rock backbone. For example, a slide guitar is at the forefront in just be simple, while Old Black Hen features a guest vocalist with a voice that is basically the vocal equivalent of a slide guitar. While it comes out of nowhere in some sense, it is a good song with some very cool, almost ragtime-y piano licks, and a worthy addition to the album
