The album title is based on a personal anecdote, a home video from Declan’s own childhood where his sister can be heard asking this very question, to which we hear his response, ‘and now I’m going to sing my new album’. What Do You Think About the Car? Q&A. Drums Garrett Ray. Cello Vanessa nn. Engineered By Jimmy Robertson. Mixing Assistants Eduardo de la Paz & Max Prior.
What Do You Think About the Car? is the debut studio album by English singer-songwriter and musician Declan McKenna. It was released worldwide on 21 July 2017, through Columbia Records. What Do You Think About the Car? has been described as featuring indie rock throughout. In 2015, at age 15, McKenna won the Glastonbury Festival's Emerging Talent Competition, and started writing songs for the album soon after, while still in school. Writing went on for 2 years
There’s been such a fuss about Declan McKenna, it’s tempting to wonder if folks were subconsciously confusing his name with the one on Elvis Costello’s birth certificate, Declan MacManus. In early 2015, when McKenna was barely 16, he was already being courted by numerous music-biz types. Later that year, brandishing a loop pedal and a red bandana, the floppy-haired bard won Glastonbury Festival’s Emerging Talent Competition. They’re spoken-word snippets, where McKenna seems to be sending up his voice-of-the-youth rep by taking it very literally. What Do You Think About the Car? opens with the voices of children-McKenna’s sister asking the title phrase in audio from an old home movie, the four-year-old proto-troubadour chirping back cutely, I think it’s really good and now I’m going to sing my new album now. A track later, Brazil ends with a young boy’s voice from a popular meme.
Interestingly enough, the album was co-produced by Rostam Batmanglij, a former member of Vampire Weekend, the group that galvanized this milieu. So, when approaching this album head-on, there isn't too much to love or too much to hate beforehand, even in the information age. The cover art leaves much to be desired.

See, while there’s a huge swathe of ‘What Do You Think About The Car?’ that could well owe its sound to the dour singalongs of the post-Britpop years, everything here is doused in sonic ds, the kind of synth beeps and squelches and breakdowns your average bucket hat would turn their sunburnt nose up at.
