This is the first Felt album with no instrumental tracks. The cover photo subject is keyboardist Martin Duffy. The record features Duffy's organ alongside two guitars, one sometimes played by Lawrence. The organ is foregrounded in the mix and creates a vastly new sound for the band. In a 2011 NME feature, Hamish MacBain said of the album that "Lawrence delivered his masterpiece," and described it as "the first truly classic Creation album. All songs written by Lawrence. Felt signed to Cherry Red Records and their first single as a band, "Something Sends Me to Sleep", was released in 1981. Their first album, Crumbling the Antiseptic Beauty, followed the next year. Gilbert left and was replaced on bass by Mick Lloyd. The band's lineup would then remain unchanged through their next two albums, The Splendour of Fear and The Strange Idols Pattern and Other Short Stories. Gold Mine Trash is the first compilation album by English alternative rock band Felt, released in 1987. It collects tracks from the band's singles and albums recorded for Cherry Red between 1981 and 1985. The cover photo shows a detail from the Throne Hall of Neuschwanstein Castle in Germany. Tracks 3 and 5 were unreleased versions recorded as demos for Blanco y Negro Records. The version of "Fortune" here is a re-recording of the song from the band's first album. All tracks written by Lawrence and Maurice Deebank, except where noted.
