Cold Blood is a long-standing R&B horn funk band founded by Larry Field in 1968 and was originally based in the East Bay region of the San Francisco Bay Area. The band has also performed and recorded under the name Lydia Pense and Cold Blood, due to the popularity of their lead singer, Lydia Pense. The band first came to prominence in 1969 when rock impresario Bill Graham signed them after an audition and they played the Fillmore West in San Francisco

Their debut (tracks one through seven) is predominantly comprised of sassy blues and R&B covers injected with their personal groove, while tracks eight through 13 from Sisyphus ply their originals, except for a scorching cover of the Hayes/Porter classic "Your Good Thing" with the young Pointer Sisters on backing vocals. The 2001 remastering is adequate, but the sound, especially on the drums, is a little tinny and compressed.

Sisyphus - Cold Blood's second release for Bill Graham's San Francisco label - was a shift to a more aggressive and decidedly funkier sound. Taking their cues as much from James Brown's . s as from their Bay Area contemporaries and labelmates Tower of Power, Sisyphus is a much more cohesive and concentrated effort compared to their 1969 eponymous debut.

The small and demure and Blond Lydia Pence is one of the best soulful singers of her time and really delivers on this breakthrough album. Band is tight and on a par with Tower of Power, only Cold Blood was more consistent since Lydia was the center and soul of the band unlike the many singers Tower of Power went through over the years.
