Live at the Garden is a 1967 live album by James Brown and The Famous Flames. It was recorded on January 14, 1967 in the middle of a ten-day engagement at the Latin Casino in Cherry Hill, New Jersey - Brown's first at an upscale nightclub. Like most of Brown's live albums, overdubbed crowd noise was added to the original recording for its LP release. It included one new song, "Let Yourself Go", which was recorded after hours at the casino; it appeared on the album disguised as a live recording.

James Brown was raised in poverty in Augusta, Georgia. 1950s: Joined the Gospel Starlighters in 1953, a vocal quartet led by Bobby Byrd, after completing a four-year stint in prison for robbery. As Brown became the focal point of the act, the group changed its name to 'The Famous Flames' and its focus from gospel to R&B. In 1955 The Famous Flames record "Please Please Please" at the studio of WIBB in Macon, Georgia.

No James Brown album is totally worthless and this one has iconic significance as the first full concert by Brown and his Famous Flames to be released on record. But having said that, it’s an okay album, not a great one. It’s on a par with early Ike and Tins records, not with brown’s own later major Funk discs.

James Brown clearly respected Michael Jackson as a musician and took no small amount of pride in being his musical mentor. So when Jackson goes up and whispers in James Brown’s ear, Brown trusts him. He addresses the crowd: Give him a big round of applause, because he just insisted that I introduce Prince! James Brown doesn’t seem to know anything about Prince, but he takes Jackson’s word for it. Eventually, this Prince fellow makes his way through the crowd and gets on stage. Brown offers him the center stage, after offering his blessing

Brown’s appearance that night at the Boston Garden had been scheduled for months, but it nearly didn’t happen. Following a long night of riots and fires in the predominantly black Roxbury and South End sections of the city, Boston’s young mayor, Kevin White, gave serious consideration to canceling an event that some feared would bring the same kind of violence into the city’s center. Atkins and White convinced public television station WGBH to carry the concert on short notice, but convincing James Brown took some doing.
