Painted Ruins is the fifth studio album by American indie rock band Grizzly Bear as the follow-up to their 2012 album Shields. It was released on August 18, 2017 by RCA. Along with the announcement of the album, the band announced a fall European and North American tour. Grizzly Bear spent two years writing and recording for the album

Consider this: Though Painted Ruins is Grizzly Bear’s most synth-heavy and beat-driven album to date (short of the Horn of Plenty remix collection), there’s nothing here that approaches the pluck of Two Weeks, one of the catchiest hits of ’00s indie rock. Mourning Sound certainly aims for a similar strain of driving pop power and comes as close to it as the album gets, with new wave synths and a steady beat. But for once, perhaps what sticks with you most is the lyrical imagery, with Rossen cooing about city street noise. As the guitar comes barreling around a tight bend and the beats hit the gas, it creates this sense that someone’s gaining ground behind you. The scene is apt, as Droste sings about appreciating some distance from a partner while being pulled closer to them.

Painted Ruins finds the members of Grizzly Bear perfectly in sync with each other, especially with the interlocking dueling melodies of the chorus on Neighbors. In a 2014 video interview with The New York Times, Droste called frustration key to the collaborative process. He explained that if they could create an album easily in a couple months, something would be wrong, and at the end of every album, they ask if they will be able to do it again. Three years later, in an interview with Spin, Droste admitted that the recording of Shields was stressful, calling it an arduous, er-and-over thing

Unbeholden to the band’s existence, Painted Ruins has a cavalier quality that you’d struggle to spot in its tense forebears. Rossen and Ed Droste still spindle out riffs that crest like fractal waves, and their haunted Beach Boys melodies echo through the dense orchestrations. But where they used to overlap neat pastoral melodies until the ground felt like it was churning beneath you, the landscape here is smouldering, godforsaken and explosive, their awkwardness untamed. There are a few consistent differences.

Talk about Grizzly Bear - Painted Ruins

Xtreem
Overall, I agree with most people about the mastering. Could be a bit more dynamic, but compared to the digital download that came with it, this pressing is still head over heals what that is. But the pressing itself hasn't given me any issues with excessive inner groove distortion, overblown saturation, surface noise or anything along those lines. It's a pretty well executed pressing. It's an excellent album, a pressing worth the price of admission over the CD and a great aesthetic. Maybe I was lucky with my particular copy. This is going to give people a heart attack, but I like digitally sourced LP's. Give me a well done digitally sourced record any day over an all analog one, as long as the master is amazing. What comes out of the interface and onto the lacquer is analog as it is, without the drawbacks of an increased noise floor, deterioration over time and inconsistencies in playback (At least when it comes to the master recording). That means that when the stampers used for pressing your albums need to be replaced, you can be assured you'll get the same great sound quality that you got with the first run of pressings.
Brakora
Anyone else having a copy with Side C on both sides of the second vinyl?
Zuser
Mine as well. I contacted RCA but so far I got no reply.
Ffel
Same problem here! I've just purchased it: maybe it is a second pressing issue?
Thundershaper
Yes, my copy has side C on both sides.... So sad...
Xtintisha
I’m pretty disappointed in this pressing and after reviewing the comments, I see I’m not alone. There is no range and the album distorts at times. The beauty of this album is completely overshadowed with this pressing.
Bynelad
Such a ridiculously good pressing, should be a standard for all vinyl releases.
MisterMax
Okay. I was just reading all comments about this pressing and I have now some background to talk about it.My advice is: Change to a flat-sounding cartridge and check how better it sounds. Come on, is it still digital? Yes. But sounds much better.I used to play on my 1978 Shure M44G and exchanged to my Nagaoka MP-11. What a difference!Try it!
Dusho
it definitely suffers from a digital sourcing. it's loud; lacks a rich full dynamic and leaves the listener walking away with a veiled experience. is it fatiguing. no. would i have purchased knowing it was pressed from a digital source? no
Granirad
This is a wonderful album that sounds particularly impressive on vinyl. Highly recommended.

Just here to confirm for whoever missed the news that that this album was sourced digitally by the band before going to RCA. Yes, Painted Ruins is compressed to a noticeable level but I have heard way worse mixes from good bands (points to the very recent Trash Generator by Tera Melos). In an interview, Chris Taylor mentioned they recorded the entire record in their home-studios before bringing it to potential labels. While I can understand how this was a practical and cheaper method to make the album, I for one was a little let down when I learned this. Once I listened to the album, however, I realized the mix itself and mastering are very well done. Even for a digitally sourced record, the shimmering, calculated beauty of Grizzly Bear's sound can be heard especially if your setup can give extra life to the mix.

very nice pressing indeed! no crackle or pops or hiss or non fill issues. wish all modern vinyl would be pressed like this. album itself is very beautiful and - along with the new fleet foxes and war on drugs - my top 3 record of 2017 so far. only complain I have is the mastering: even on lp "painted ruins" sounds very loud and digital to me, missing details and dynamic range. I know most people these days listen to music via shitty equipment, but come on! a bit more audiophile would do no harm.
Samardenob
I didn't receive my vinyl yet but I'm really concerned since the digital source sounds VERY compressed to me. Any thoughts?
Kelezel
The Vinyl sounds amazing. Doesn't sounds overly compressed to me.
KiddenDan
Amazing album! Hoping for a Japanese release with extra tracks.
Coiril
What a fantastic sounding record, and an all-round brilliant album. Definitely a keeper.
Delari
fully agreed. I wish all records were pressed in this quality. unfortunately the opposite is the case.
Auridora
Did anyone else miss out on a download code? Label on the front but nothing inside.
Little Devil
My copy had a download card. Very annoying when they forget to put one in.
Rarranere
Fantastic pressing, but unfortunately the music was not recorded to tape like previous records and is very hot/loud. With this kind of loudness, details cannot be heard and is fatiguing to listen to all the way through. The Cd is bad too, but there is a 320 MP3 out there that is a tad less dynamic but proper.
Hbr
Clean pressing, leaps and bounds beyond the norm these days.
Blackbrand
Vinyl sounds pretty solid. For those who care: it also has been clean, free of defect and flat.

Is the download MP3 only or are there options for WAV/lossless?
Ceck
only mp3, sadly. wish more records would come with wav downloads, as they are aimed for the audiophile crowd anyhow.
The_NiGGa
how's pressing sound? Wonder if GB actually cared to do a good pressing on black vinyl after bashing colored vinyl.
ᴜɴɪᴄᴏʀɴ
GB bashed colored vinyl? I heard the gold shields press wasn't great, but I don't remember hearing anything about them being against colored pressings.
Love Me
my pressing sounds superb. flat, dynamic, silent, crackle- and pop free. wish all modern day vinyl would sound like this.
Lailace
Still trying to figure out what I think in terms of production and mastering. Fair to say it sounds as good as anything they've released on vinyl so far. In terms of pressing it's almost flawless. Just finished disc 1 and it was completely noise free!
