The Rumour is an album released by Olivia Newton-John in August 1988. After the relative commercial flop of Soul Kiss, The Rumour found Olivia Newton-John attempting a comeback by turning to a hip producer, Davitt Sigerson, and recording the title track, written and produced by Elton John and very much in his style. There was also "Can't We Talk It Over In Bed," which attempted to reignite Newton-John's steamy "Physical" image. The makeover was unavailing, however: The Rumour didn't cross the halfway mark in the Hot 100, while the album was Newton-John's lowest charting effort since 1971.

An entertaining hour in company of the delightful Olivia Newton-John performing songs from her album The Rumour against a backdrop of spectacular Australian scenery. Let's Talk About Tomorrow".

The Rumour" is like a slightly subdued sequel to 1985's "Soul Kiss". Both have top-notch 80's pop-rock production, both continue Olivia's sexy image, and both were largely ignored by the American public. There is a new direction, however, on "The Rumour". Sex is still a force, but now it is blended with themes of fidelity, lasting relationships and the future of our planet. So, I find this album to be another example of a very good recording that just doesn't sell, simply because the artist has passed his or her prime period of commercial appeal.
