The Esso Trinidad Steel Band - Esso flac album

The Esso Trinidad Steel Band was a steel band from Trinidad, active from 1942 to 1976. The group began in 1942 as the Tripoli Steel Band, named after a lyric in the United States Marines' Hymn. In 1951, the group came under the leadership of Hugh Borde, who directed the ensemble to greater technical skill and established them as contenders in local Carnival competitions. In 1964, the group won the Steel Band Music Festival.

Produced by Van Dyke Parks, the Esso Trinidad Steel Band's self-titled LP is a wonderfully funky collection of calypso-inspired renditions of pop hits like the Jackson 5's "I Want You Back" and Simon & Garfunkel's "Cecilia. The sheer magnitude and intricacy of the steel drumming is astounding. The two-dozen percussionists are like cogs in a colossal machine, each working in perfect harmony with the others and all of them essential to the outcome. Parks' sun-kissed production contributes mightily to the overall party.

But when Esso cancelled its sponsorship, the group again rechristened itself to the Tripoli Trinidad Steel Band. Some copies of this LP had stickers affixed to the front replacing the word "Esso" in the title with "Tripoli".
