Elmo Sylvester Hope (June 27, 1923 – May 19, 1967) was an American jazz pianist, composer, and arranger, chiefly in the bebop and hard bop genres. He grew up playing and listening to jazz and classical music with Bud Powell, and both were close friends of another influential pianist, Thelonious Monk

Minor Bertha – Elmo Hope. A percussive medium up swinger full of rhythm section hits and a challenging melody with interesting twists and turns. It's ideal for our Rhythm Section Workshop series, which, with the aid of individual Minus You tracks, lets each rhythm section player master their part while they lock in with two experienced professional players. Our audio clip starts with the melody. On the recording, Elmo has drummer Frank Butler set up the melody with a four-measure introduction. Butler starts with a quote of the melody. In 1957, Elmo moved to Los Angeles from his native NYC.
