One of the least of Russia's fin de siècle composers, Anatol Liadov is remembered principally for three short orchestral works: Baba-Yaga, Kikimora, and Enchanted Lake. Famously indolent, Liadov also managed to squeeze out the 21 mostly short piano pieces on this disc by Stephen Coombs. But, aside from being few and brief, Liadov's piano music proves as beautifully written, wonderfully melodic, and supremely sensual as the remainder of his slim output.
