The String-A-Longs' Wheels was just such a tune, enjoying wide popularity throughout Europe in 1961 and rising to in the UK and in the US where only a Top 30 cover version by Billy Vaughan stopped it from going all the way to Written and produced by Norman Petty in his Clovis studio, it was more than just a great tune. The String-A-Longs' innovative four guitar line-up enabled an interesting rhythmic counterpoint to be added to the melody, and their use of Magnatone amplifiers gave the band a fresh and appealing sound

The String-A-Longs reached number three on the pop charts with the mild-mannered guitar instrumental "Wheels," but aren't as well remembered as their labelmates Johnny & the Hurricanes, even though the latter never made a hit that charted as high as "Wheels. Johnny & the Hurricanes' "Red River Rock" is reinterpreted by the String-A-Longs as "Red River Twist," and a version of "Walk Don't Run" likewise pays tribute to the instrumental rock & roll tradition
