Great White Wonder, or GWW, is the first notable rock bootleg album, released in July 1969, and containing unofficially released recordings by Bob Dylan. It is also the first release of the famous bootleg record label Trademark of Quality (or TMQ). Several of the tracks presented here were recorded with The Band in the summer of 1967 in West Saugerties, New York, during the informal sessions that were later released in a more complete form in Dylan's 1975 album The Basement Tapes.

Eric Harvey details how Great White Wonder predicted what we now know as the modern album leak. In 1969, an underground Bob Dylan album featuring unreleased material found its way into the world; 40 years later, the effects of this early leak are still playing out. by Eric Harvey.

Labels of some copies appear to have a halo of printing - perhaps in reverse, as if being pressed against another label.

Rare vintage "Fan club" double album! "BOB DYLAN- GREAT WHITE WONDER" 1969 plain label The condition of the gatefold cover is about VG+ with some tape on seams and minor writing. It began appearing in stores in June 1969, and got its nickname from the plain white jacket. This is the second version, still from 1969, but decorated with the titular stamp. Ten cuts were drawn from the "Minnesota Tapes", a collection of American standards recorded in May and December 1961.

Talk about Bob Dylan - Great White Wonder

Keth
I have one of these records. I don't see any value for it ? Any idea what it might be worth ?
Ironfire
Apparently, the full-on TMOQ edition done near the end of their existence. Stickered, stamped, with various colored vinyls, cover colors, and--a nice information insert. Some copies came with enclosed TMOQ catalogues that had listings for most titles up until 1973 or so..
JoldGold
Apparently, these showed up in different colored covers and vinyls as they were transitioned from the big 1-2-3-4 labels to the 'farm pig' labels.
Aria
Likely, the first actual TMOQ edition, with a sticker, a 'farm' pig stamp (their first design), and bid 1, 2, 3, 4 numbered labels. Various colors of vinyl, usually a white cover for this edition. Later TMOQ editions sometimes used colored sleeves.
Mataxe
The GF-001, 002, 003, 004 edition was apparently an early knockoff of the initial edition. Bob's Boots and Great White Answers name this the first edition-but leave room for the (likely) probability that it was not a first press, that the first press was completely devoid of any matrix information. This edition is difficult to find in clean condition. The GF edition was repressed using GF 001/2, 002/2, 003/2, 004/2. None of these had any cover stamps.
Qutalan
This is likely part of the initial pressing that the makers decided, with some dealer's prompting, to name and stamp 'Great White Wonder' on the front of the jacket. No matrix information or other markings are indicated. Probably about 1000 plus or minus a few hundred were made on the first pressing.
iSlate
This particular edition of the album, while early is likely not the first edition, despite Bob's Boots and Great White Answers claims. The first edition had not matrix information of any kind. The first few hundred had no stamp on the jacket either.. Part way through the distribution of it, the idea was hatched to name it 'Great White Wonder'. The remaining unsold copies of the first pressing (about 1000) were stamped on the front of the jacket. No other markings were present. The GF edition was apparently an early copy of it.
Wiliniett
The matrix number as such is pretty well invisible - I was listening to it technically out of order for years because despite numerous checks I didn’t see a thing in the matrix. My eyesight is super good. A friend convinced me to give it another look under really bright light and try holding it at different angles and there it was.
Negal
I have a version bought in Amsterdam in 69. It is two lps in separate covers. On stamped "GWW "Talking bear mountain massacre picnic blues" the other stamped "seems like a frerze out". Both with a small round yellow sticker with a pig and txt "trade mark of quality". One is pressed in green vinyl, the other in red vinyl. Dors anyone know these?
Eyalanev
This particular version of GWW is a bit of a curio..no matrix numbers and yet housed in a sleeve with a 'TMQ' style rubber stamp? Apparently, the first 100 copies ever pressed of this title had no matrix numbers, though I have no idea where this info originated from- it just seems to be alluded to a lot- yet the rubber stamped 'titled' editions came a little later, when news began to spread of this illicit white label release. If anyone out there has any more info on this version, or the original non-matrixed editions, it would be great to hear it! I'm left scratching my head over this one as it is.
Foxanayn
My copy both have white labels w/o writing and the gatefold has no markings as well. No matrix numbers either. I didn't know what it was for about a month as it is completely blank. Now it's one of my keepers. Anyone else have this version? Thx
Tiv
I have this as well, picked it up at Recycled Records in Reno NV. mine has one disk with white lables and one with pale yellow lables. everything is blank and no matrix numbers anywhere. It definitely has the TMOQ style stamp on the cover. the cover looks aged but in fantastic condition and the records themselves were NM.
MrCat
It matches my copy too. I got mine in March of 2017 in Toronto.
mIni-Like
Well, all I can say is this entry matches my copy exactly, found in Southern California in the 1990's and sitting in what looked ot be a rarely-touched personal collection.
Nagis
there is a version with a "splashed colours" sleeve (see images)

One of the most famous bootlegs of all time. This is the first bootleg ever to be produced in the rock-and-roll era. Great White Wonder was originally released in the United States in July of 1969. There was little on this piece to identify it to the world. It came out in a blank white gatefold cover, with blank white labels. The only identifying mark whatsoever is the matrix number: GF 001/2/3/4. (gwa 1Aa version 1). The name 'Great White Wonder' probably actually began as a joke when retailers needed to come up with a name for this blank white album. The term quickly became synonymous with Dylan in the bootleg world however, and has since been used many, many times to refer to either the man or his work. © 1998 CD Pinkerton bobsboots.comLater in the year this famous album was repressed. This second repress, (gwa 1Aa version 2 ) can be identified only by the addition of the number "2" carved after the matrix on all four sides of the LP. © 1998 CD Pinkerton bobsboots.comAt about the same time that the album first made its appearance in the United States, a Swedish pressing began circulating in Europe. The differences in this album and the previous is that this one had a very thin blank white gatefold cover, and a machine-stamped matrix BD 101 A/B. (gwa 1Ab). It is not impossible that this is actually the first "Great White Wonder". © 1998 CD Pinkerton bobsboots.comTowards the end of the year, one of the above pieces began appearing in the east coast of the United States in two separate blank white covers. The matrix number has been completely scratched out, so it is not sure exactly which piece this is, or if it is actually a different pressing. This set is known as gwa 1Ac.© 1998 CD Pinkerton bobsboots.comHot Wacks, the book that tries to chronicle bootlegs by every artist, claims that there is an original version of the above album with fewer songs. It is doubtful, however, that this actually exists.© 1998 CD Pinkerton bobsboots.comThe quality on all of the above pieces is similar, and fairly good. As the same master plates were used over and over, sound quality began to deteriorate somewhat. While these pieces, pressed in the last year of the decade, are fairly easy to chronicle ... things start getting a little more complicated from here on out. There are no fewer than fifty separately identifiable albums that have either copied this material directly, or have released this material in varying qualities under the same title.© (www.bobsboots.com)
